The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your mandible (lower jaw) to your skull. The joint can be found on both sides of your head in front of your ears. It allows your jaw to open and close, enabling you to speak and eat.

Causes

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders are conditions affecting the jaw joints and surrounding muscles and ligaments. It can be caused by trauma, an improper bite, arthritis or wear and tear. Common symptoms include jaw tenderness, headaches, earaches and facial pain.

TMJ Symptoms

Disorders of the temporomandibular joint are typically characterized by pain and tenderness in the jaw joint area. Other signs and symptoms of TMJ disorder include:

  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Issues opening your mouth wide
  • Aching in or around your ear
  • Locking of the jaw joint
  • Aching facial pain
  • Head or neck aches
  • Upper shoulder pain
  • Toothaches
  • Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears
